Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain individuals under 65 with disabilities. It’s designed to help reduce healthcare costs and provide essential coverage for medical services.
Medicare is made up of several parts:
Original Medicare includes only Parts A and B. Parts C and D are optional additions offered through private insurers approved by Medicare.
Note: Even with Medicare, you may still be responsible for deductibles, copays, and other out-of-pocket costs. Many people add supplemental coverage to help manage these expenses.
Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private insurance companies and bundle Medicare Part A (hospital), Part B (medical), and often Part D (prescription drug coverage).
Many plans also include extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, transportation, and gym memberships.
Keep in mind that most Medicare Advantage plans require you to use a network of doctors and hospitals. You may also need referrals for specialists or prior authorization for certain services.
Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap, help pay for costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
These plans work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B); they don’t replace it. They cannot be used with Medicare Advantage plans.
You can see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, and the coverage is standardized across insurers.

A Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) provides standalone drug coverage to help pay for prescription medications. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
Each plan has a formulary — a list of covered drugs — organized into tiers that determine your share of the cost.
Life Insurance provides a tax-free death benefit to your beneficiaries. It’s used to replace income, cover debts, pay final expenses, or support legacy and estate planning. Common types include term life, whole life, and universal life, each customizable to fit different goals.
These annuity-based products provide predictable retirement income and help supplement Social Security or pensions.
Options include:
Long Term Care Insurance covers services that Medicare doesn’t—like home care, assisted living, and skilled nursing. Medicare.gov reports that nearly 70% of adults over 65 will require some form of long-term care, but Medicare pays little or nothing for this type of support. Benefits typically begin when you’re unable to perform two or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as dressing or eating.
Short Term Care Insurance provides temporary coverage, usually up to 12 months, for recovery after illness, injury, or surgery. It bridges the gap between Medicare coverage and long-term care needs, and typically activates when you’re unable to perform two or more ADLs.
Final Expense Insurance is a type of whole life policy designed to cover funeral, cremation, and end-of-life costs. These plans offer simplified underwriting—often with no medical exams—and provide lifetime coverage with guaranteed premiums.
This critical illness coverage pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a covered condition such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke. It helps with expenses not covered by traditional insurance, including travel, alternative treatments, or income loss. Some plans offer wellness or screening benefits.
Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays a cash benefit directly to you if you are hospitalized. This can help cover costs such as hospital admission, outpatient surgery, ambulance rides, ER visits, or rehabilitation stays.Funds can be used however you choose—including lodging, lost wages, or household expenses.
Dental, Vision, and Hearing plans help fill gaps not covered by Original Medicare. These plans assist with the cost of routine services such as dental cleanings, exams, fillings, dentures, vision tests, glasses, contact lenses, hearing exams, and hearing aids.
Some plans also include benefits for major services like crowns, implants, or bridges. PPO options are available for broader provider choice and flexibility.
This coverage supports preventive care and helps reduce costs for essential services that maintain quality of life.
